| Obama in a Hurry to Sell Devalued GM Shares |
| The Obama Administration wants to sell a sizable share of its stake in General Motors, insiders say. Such a sale in the near term would probably mean U.S. taxpayers will take a hit on the government's 2009 bailout of the beleaguered Detroit auto maker, which amounted to $50 billion.
To break even, the U.S. Treasury must sell its remaining stake—roughly 500 million shares—at a share price of $53, far above the $31.27 it closed at today on the New York Stock Exchange. Government officials say privately that they'll accept the loss because Obama would like to cut ties with the auto maker. A sale this summer makes more likely a full divestiture by the Treasury by the end of the year, thereby avoiding costly political complications for Obama in 2012. GM's shares are down due to recent events that have shaken investor confidence, particularly the steep rise in gas prices, which have hurt sales of GM's big, highly profitable trucks. Wall Street is also anxious over the sudden departure of Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell, and a high-profile sales blitz in January and February, which could improve GM earnings in the first quarter, but hurt them in future quarters. |

| The Ending of the Age of America |
| The International Monetary Fund has just set a date for the moment when the so-called "Age of America" ends and the US economy is surpassed by China's: 2016. Mark your calendar. The prediction casts a cloud over the US dollar and the Treasury market. IMF forecasters claim it doesn't matter who is elected U.S. President next year — whoever we elect will be the last American President to govern over the world's largest economy. Just a decade ago, the U.S. economy was three times larger than China's. Now, according to one bond strategist in Europe, "We are witnessing the end of America's economic hegemony." The United States has dominated the global economic scene for so long, no-one remembers anything else. America overtook Great Britain as the world's leading economic power at the end of the 19th century. Both countries practiced similar kinds of constitutional government, and had respect for civil rights and property rights. China doesn't. The Age of China promises to usher in a vastly different set of moral and economic values. Read More |

| Get Used to the Weakening Dollar |
| Weakness in the US dollar is causing the price of everything to go up. Currency experts say this picture is unlikely to change any time soon. The greenback could very well crash through all-time historical lows when compared to other major world currencies. While there's no single explanation for the dollar's weakness, there are several contributing factors: the Federal Reserve's easy-money policies, enormous new national debts and deficits, and the looming spectre of debt downgrade by rating agencies such as Standard & Poors, reacting to the ongoing financial mismanagement in Washington. In short, as trader Dennis Gartman recently observed, "the rout of the US dollar" is in full effect. Read More |
