| The Obama Administration wants to sell a sizable share of its stake in General Motors, insiders say. Such a sale in the near term would probably mean U.S. taxpayers will take a hit on the government's 2009 bailout of the beleaguered Detroit auto maker, which amounted to $50 billion.
To break even, the U.S. Treasury must sell its remaining stake—roughly 500 million shares—at a share price of $53, far above the $31.27 it closed at today on the New York Stock Exchange. Government officials say privately that they'll accept the loss because Obama would like to cut ties with the auto maker. A sale this summer makes more likely a full divestiture by the Treasury by the end of the year, thereby avoiding costly political complications for Obama in 2012.
